(Mike Shea, 2011)
1. Who are you?
Mike ”Mike" Shea
2. What do you do?
I’m a freelancer, I work from home in a purple room doing illustration/graphic design/comics/storyboards/character design/doodles.
3. When/Where/How did you get your start?
In high school my parents were like dude why don’t you go to art school and I was like no way college is for partying and then they were like art school has no math requirements and I was like duuuuuuuuude wut. Graduated 2005, moved to New Yawk, worked in TV production for a few years, then art director for Peanut Butter & Co and now here I am.
4. How long have you been at it?
Doodler 4 lyfe, yo.
5. What is the most important thing we should know about you?
On my back I have an unusually large and elaborate birthmark that is in the shape of a map complete with START and TREASURE locations. Unfortunately I have no idea how to get to the area represented on the map.
6. Is there anyone else in your field who you particularly admire?
Oh man so many! I’ll just stick to comic artists I guess: Frank Quitely, Chris Ware, Anders Nilsen, Paul Pope, Jesse Moynihan, Craig Thompson, Sammy Harkham, David Mazzuchelli, Brecht Evens, so many talented people. My biggest admiree is probably Bill Watterson but he’s not really working in this field anymore :(
7. What types of art are you into?
I’m mostly into ambitious narrative art; long novels, serialized comics, a tiny percentage of TV shows. I rarely go to galleries so I don’t really know what’s going on out there, however I can tell you definitively that I am not at all into playground slide-based art.
8. You got any crazy hobbies or unique talents?
You might not think a person could be dominant in the game of Connect Four, but I am extremely good at Connect Four.
9. What’s your favourite vice?
Trashy Netflix movies from the 60’s and 70’s and also ones that star Master P.
10. If someone was to write a craigslist missed connection about you, what would it say?
Handsome Dude Outside, Are You Still Outside?
11. Truth or Dare? Elaborate.
If my name was Darren I would challenge people to a game of Truth or Darren. Kudos to the intrepid fellow who chooses Darren.
12. What is your most prized possession?
At my high school graduation party my grandfather gave me a beat-up old used dirty paint brush to use in art school. It hangs above my drawing desk wherever I go.
13. How do you get over the hump?
All of the workdays are all equally excellent days.
