Hump Day Q&A: Louie Chin
1. Who Are You?
Hello! I am Louie Chin.
2. What do you do?
I draw pictures. Cartoonist? Illustrator?
3. When/Where/How did you get your start?
Like most artists, I started drawing pretty young. I recall drawing something for a book project in third grade and all the kids at school were telling me how great it was! Fast forward a million years, I got my “pro” start when Lars Brown, creator of North World, asked me to draw a portrait for him in his book. It got me pretty pumped seeing my work in a published book. So, I just started drawing a lot more and putting it on the net, trying to get my name out there and self publishing my own comics.
4. How long have you been at it?
Gosh, I’m not even sure. It has to be like, 8 years. But, who knows, I’ve been drawing forever.
5. What is the most important thing we should know about you?
This question is too hard and left it last. I still can’t answer it.
6. Is there anyone else in your field that you particularly admire?
I would definitely have to say the big names like Daniel Clowes, Craig Thompson, Adrian Tomine, and Jordan Crane just to name a few. There are so many talented artists all over that I can’t even start naming that I found over the net.
7. What other types of art are you into?
I secretly want to make movies. So, directing or cinematography would be top on the list. I also like designer toys, like all that vinyl stuff. To be more specific though, I love Michael Lau, Eric So and the Brothersfree’s work.
8. You got any crazy hobbies or unique talents?
Um.. I can do like 25 push ups in a row.
9. What’s your favourite vice?
I tend to buy clothes that I can’t afford. My apologies to my bank account.
10: You eat food? What kind? Like to cook?
I’m a big fan of burgers. I’m not a snob about it so it can be from anywhere. I’ve never had In-N-Out though, so that’s kind of blasphemy in the burger world. That’s a hint for someone to Fed-Ex me some.
11: If someone was to write a craigslist missed connection about you, what would it say?
I saw you on the subway looking miserable.
12: What is your most prized possession?
Probably my Bugatti Veyron. I love to drive around in that thing. Just kidding, I don’t know anything about cars.
13. How do you make it over the creative hump/slump?
Whenever I feel kind of down, doesn’t have to be creative block necessarily, I feel it’s best to go out and go for a run or do any type of exercise.
(Louie Chin is a illustrator/cartoonist who lives in the cool part of Brooklyn, NY. His dream job is to one day work with avant-garde composer Waka Flocka Flame. He is available for freelance work and will certainly do a bang-up job whether you are an avant-garde composer or not.)
