Artist(s) You Should Know: Day 19 by Guest Contributor Bernadette Cruz
Capturing the moment is second nature to husband and wife duo Jeremy and Claire Weiss, who photograph under the moniker Day 19. Jeremy calls their work “romantic induced realism,” and their natural, relaxed style has not gone unnoticed. Day 19’s raw talent runs the gamut from fine art to commercial photography for clients such as Converse, Nike, and Puma. Originally from New Jersey, the couple is currently based in Los Angeles and their work screams “fun in the sun”.

Almost always shot outdoors, some sporting sun flares, their photographs allow the viewer to experience an image with direction and profound emotion. Like in “Big Sur,” the viewer is captivated by action, ambient fog and textured waters. From their portraits, like those of David Lynch and Jason Lee, to their Polaroid project, to their commissioned campaigns for Converse and Nike, or their editorial work seen in Nylon, Spin or Elle, the Weisses create a quirky world that captures the essence of their models’ lifestyles. In turn, viewers enter a world in which to escape, documented by masters of their medium.

When not busy on assignments, Jeremy and Claire Weiss continue their
work with THIS Los Angeles, a gallery/studio/office space in the Highland Park neighborhood they co-founded with four friends to cultivate the local art scene, in the spirit of Andy Warhol’s “Factory.” Currently on view is a group show, “These Friends Three,” which opened on February 24.
